Leaders of the Ganatantra Mancha and some other opposition parties on Saturday at a roundtable discussion alleged that Bangladesh was engulfed in corruption.
The ruling Awami League government is patronising corruption and looting by the party people and some other looters and so they could not avoid the responsibility for mass corruption in the country, they said.
The Ganosamhati Andolan, a partner of the Mancha, organised the discussion at the National Press Club on the issue of mass corruption and the government’s responsibility for it.
Chief coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolan Zonayed Saki chaired the discussion.
Nagarik Oikya president Mahmudur Rahman Manna said that the country was engulfed in mass corruption and the Awami League government was patronising the corrupt people and the looters.
Moreover, the economy of the country is facing serious crisis and the reserve has fallen to its lowest level, he said, adding that it will be difficult to run the economic activities smoothly.
For this reason, prime minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to visit China to get more money from that country, Manna also said.
Executive coordinator of Ganosamhati Abul Hassan Rubel read out an introductory paper at the programme where he said that the AL government failed to ensure good governance in the country.
It also tarnished the image of the country abroad for mass corruption, Rubel added.
Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Huq said that the AL government had criminalised the politics of the country.
To stay in power without mandate of the people they have patronised the corrupt and the looters, Saiful Huq said.
Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki said that the AL government was leading the country towards a failed state and it wanted to stay in power appeasing the Indian government.
Referring to the corruption involvement of former army chief Aziz Ahmed, former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed and National Board of Revenue official Matiur Rahman, Saki said that the government was trying to save them.
Gono Forum general secretary Subrata Chowdhury said that without mass movement it would not be possible to oust the AL government.
Bhashani Onusari Parishad convener Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu said that the Ganatantra Mancha would wage all-out programmes against the government to compel them resign from power.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD senior vice-president Tania Rob said that the people of the country were eagerly waiting to see the end of Awami misrule.
Bangladesh JSD general secretary Nazmul Haque Prodhan called on the opposition political parties to wage movements against the failures of the government.
Jatiya Mukti Council secretary Faiezul Hakim said that his party would take part in the anti-government movements. Ganosamhati central leader Julhasnayeen Babu conducted the programme.
