The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Bangladesh is inviting motivated young professionals to apply for the position of National UN Youth Volunteer – Research Assistant under the Transformative Economic Policy Programme (TEPP). Based in Dhaka, this three-month assignment offers hands-on experience in evidence-based policy research and institutional strengthening. The role provides a unique opportunity to contribute to Bangladesh’s transition toward sustainable and inclusive economic growth while developing professional skills within one of the UN’s most dynamic governance programmes.

Applications close on 2 November 2025, with the expected start date of 9 November 2025.

Supporting Inclusive Growth and Governance

Since 1972, UNDP has partnered with Bangladesh to promote democratic governance, sustainable development, and institutional capacity building. From supporting post-war recovery to guiding progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UNDP has played a catalytic role in the country’s transformation.

Within UNDP’s Democratic Governance Cluster, the Transformative Economic Policy Programme (TEPP) works to enhance public sector innovation, strengthen policy coherence, and support inclusive economic reform. The programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) of the United Kingdom, assists the Government of Bangladesh in preparing for graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status. It does so by promoting data-driven policymaking, improved trade facilitation, and institutional readiness for investment and economic transformation.

A Strategic Role for Emerging Researchers

The Research Assistant assignment contributes directly to TEPP’s Baseline Assessment, which establishes the programme’s initial evidence base. Working closely with the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Analyst, volunteers will collect and analyse qualitative data from diverse stakeholders, including public agencies, private enterprises, and business associations.

Key responsibilities include conducting Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), recording and transcribing qualitative data, and performing manual coding according to an established analytical framework. The Research Assistants will also support background research, contribute to communication materials, and assist with the documentation of TEPP events and knowledge-sharing activities.

By supporting the Research and Analytics Unit (RAU) of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), volunteers will directly contribute to strengthening national capacity for evidence-based policy design.

What Volunteers Will Gain

This assignment provides more than professional experience—it offers a pathway to becoming part of Bangladesh’s development journey. Volunteers will:

  • Gain in-depth exposure to UNDP’s governance and policy reform work.
  • Develop practical research and data management skills in a real-world development context.
  • Collaborate with senior researchers, policy analysts, and government stakeholders.
  • Strengthen competencies in communication, teamwork, and analytical writing.
  • Contribute to initiatives supporting Bangladesh’s smooth and sustainable economic transition.

Through mentorship and collaboration, the role prepares young professionals for future careers in development, research, or public policy while aligning with the UN’s commitment to youth empowerment and volunteerism.

Eligibility and Competencies

Candidates must be nationals or legal residents of Bangladesh between the ages of 18 and 80. Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree in Economics, Development Studies, Public Policy, Business Administration, Statistics, Geography and Environment, or a related discipline.

At least one year of relevant experience is required, particularly in qualitative data collection, analysis, or research. Candidates must be fluent in both English and Bangla.

The ideal applicant demonstrates strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with ethical research practices. Experience conducting interviews or focus groups, managing data, or working with development or governance programmes will be considered an asset.

Ethical and Professional Standards

Volunteers are expected to uphold UNDP’s values of integrity, professionalism, and inclusivity. Assignments must be carried out with respect for confidentiality and data protection standards. Volunteers should also demonstrate flexibility, teamwork, and a commitment to achieving tangible results in a multicultural environment.

UNDP Bangladesh provides a supportive workplace that values diversity and gender balance. The organization is committed to an equitable hiring process and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds, including those with disabilities.

Living and Working in Dhaka

The position is based in Dhaka, the vibrant capital of Bangladesh and one of the fastest-growing cities in the world. The city offers a rich mix of history, culture, and modern development. Work will primarily take place within Dhaka, with no anticipated travel outside the city.

Dhaka provides access to international schools, healthcare facilities, and efficient transportation networks. Its growing economy and dynamic social landscape make it an ideal setting for professionals seeking to engage with real-world development challenges.

How to Apply

Interested candidates are encouraged to apply via the United Nations Volunteer (UNV) platform before 2 November 2025.

This role represents an opportunity for young professionals to contribute to meaningful change—advancing inclusive governance, strengthening institutions, and supporting Bangladesh’s sustainable future.
