Certain quarter plotting anarchy over tomorrow’s Hasina verdict: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said a certain quarter is conspiring to create anarchy in the country, centring on a verdict against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina on mass killing charges. 

The nation must stand firm against such attempts, Fakhrul urged while speaking at a discussion marking the death anniversary of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani at the National Press Club today (16 November).

“Tomorrow, the verdict will be delivered against fascist Hasina for mass killings. This has created uncertainty and fear across the country. 

“A group is trying to use this to plunge Bangladesh into chaos again. We must stand united. We cannot afford to waste the opportunity created by the student–public uprising. We must keep the path of democratic transition smooth,” he said.

The BNP leader remarked that politics in Bangladesh is becoming increasingly distorted, with elements emerging that the people could never have imagined.

Fakhrul said the aspirations of the people are yet to be fully realised. 

While the interim government came with the support of all, it remains to be seen whether its political direction aligns with public expectations, he added. 

“We have repeatedly said that elections are the only path to restore democracy and reflect the people’s will.”

On the upcoming election, scheduled for February, Fakhrul said, “Some groups are trying to deliberately create instability and raise various demands to delay the election.” 

What the country needs most now is an elected government with the mandate of the people, he added.

Calling on all political parties, Fakhrul said, “Do not delay any further. Support the election process and ensure the election can take place.”
