Reforms in the country should be carried out through a democratic and political process, BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said today.
“Any kind of reforms in the past have been done in the country through a political process. Now, if someone outside politics comes along and says they will fix everything without including politicians, that will not happen,” he said during a national dialogue hosted by the Forum for Bangladesh Studies at the Krishibid Institute Bangladesh.
“Come to the parliament with the people’s mandate, then do what you want through a democratic process,” he added.
Khasru also suggested getting out of signing bilateral agreements with foreign countries “to resolve the geopolitical crisis in South Asia”.
“Going to a bilateral process creates an opportunity for a strong country to show its authority. Regional organisations including SAARC need to be made more active,” he said.
Khasru also urged the Bangladesh Army to be fully prepared “in the face of fears that the Arakan Army may increase its influence in the coastal and hilly areas of Bangladesh”.
He suggested that in the interest of Bangladesh’s security, every intelligence agency should be restructured and their tasks should be determined anew.
“Now we need to build a national security architecture. A consensus should be built among all political parties in the interest of the country’s security,” he added.
