The people of Bangladesh are seeking a fair and impartial election, not one conducted merely for the sake of formality, said Shafiqur Rahman, ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
He said the authorities must ensure a fair environment first, free from muscle power and black money, before holding the polls.
Shafiqur made these remarks as the chief guest at a mass gathering organised by Jamaat’s Narsingdi district unit at the Satirpara Kalikumar Institute and College ground this afternoon.
He called for an urgent revision of the voter list, urging the removal of fake voters and the inclusion of new ones. Additionally, he stressed the importance of ensuring voting rights for expatriates.
Shafiqur also said that administrative officials who failed in their duties in the past or were involved in the repression of the people should not be assigned responsibilities in the upcoming elections. However, he added that honest and patriotic officials would have public support in carrying out their duties.
Claiming Jamaat to be the “most persecuted party in Bangladesh,” he demanded the immediate restoration of the party’s registration and its electoral symbol.
Furthermore, he called for the repatriation of laundered money, insisting that it be returned to the national treasury.
The programme was presided over by Maulana Mosleh Uddin, Ameer of Jamaat’s Narsingdi district unit, while its Secretary General, Md. Amjad Hossain, conducted the event.
