We will eliminate Mujibism from every corner of the country: Nahid

National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has vowed that “Mujibism” will be removed from every part of Bangladesh, declaring that those who support it will be brought to justice.

“Our struggle is not over yet. The fight to build a new Bangladesh is ongoing,” he said while addressing a prayer meeting in memory of the July Uprising martyrs in Gazipur’s Sreepur Upazila as part of NCP’s countrywide “July March” programme today (29 July).

Nahid said, “Today, we saw that armed criminal groups were patrolling the streets of Gazipur in an attempt to intimidate us. But the National Citizen Party cannot be silenced — not in Gopalganj, not in Gazipur, not anywhere. We have set foot in all 64 districts, and we will continue this journey.”

He called on the people to support the NCP and remember those martyred and injured in last year’s mass uprising, which toppled the Awami League government.

Sarjis Alam, the party’s chief organiser for the northern region, also spoke at the event, among other leaders. 

Political parties betrayed students, public after 1990s uprising

Speaking at another rally in front of the historic Rajbari in Gazipur, Nahid Islam alleged that political parties betrayed both students and the public following the 1990s mass uprising.

Nahid said, “We have clearly stated that the July Charter and Declaration must be finalised by 5 August. We will not accept any alternatives. The government has published a draft declaration, but we have made it clear that consensus on reforms alone is not enough — there must also be agreement on how those reforms will be implemented.” 

Speaking about the events of the 1990s, he said, “An outline was drafted by the three-party alliance at that time, but no party honoured it. That betrayal cannot be repeated. This time, the July Charter must have legal enforceability. Any party that wins the election and forms the next government must be bound to implement it.”
