Dividing the nation over independence is undesirable: Salahuddin

Political exploitation of the spirit of the Liberation War has created unnecessary division in the country, BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said today (9 August).

“It is not desirable to divide a united nation by labeling people as being for or against independence of Bangladesh. None of us should wish for this after 54 years of independence,” he said while speaking at a roundtable discussion.

The event titled “Adivasis, Minority Ethnic Groups and National Security Concepts in the Context of Bangladesh”, was organised by the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Research Foundation at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital.

The BNP leader noted that a mentality of division has been created for political purposes, which has led to the “trading and politicising” of the spirit of the Liberation War. 

“All the people of Bangladesh embraced the Liberation War. Even if not everyone took part in armed struggle, they were mentally in favour of our independence,” he said.

He added that even those accused of opposing independence have not, since 1971, openly denied the country’s sovereignty. 

“Some may have had different thoughts at the time, but no one has dared to make divisive statements denying our independence,” he said.

Salahuddin also warned of long-standing international interest in the CHT region. 

“Some global powers have plans involving our hill tracts, as well as parts of India and Myanmar. They may wish to redraw boundaries to serve their interests. We must remain vigilant,” he cautioned.

The event was chaired by CHT Research Foundation Chairman Mehedi Hasan, with security analyst Major General (Retd.) Naeem Ashfaq Chowdhury delivering the keynote speech.
