Mentioning that a new political party will officially launch by the end of February, Jatiya Nagorik Committee chief organiser Sarjis Alam said he has advised Nahid Islam to step down from his ministerial role and rejoin the public, prioritising the people over power.

“Our top priority now is to form a new party. We have informed our fellow co-fighter Nahid Islam to step down from his position in government and take on a key role within the new party, serving the people directly,” Sarjis said at the “New Bangladesh” campaign event in Narayanganj today (16 February).

“The youth have high expectations after the revolution,” he said. “Even if we cannot fulfill all of them, we will make sure we differentiate ourselves from the past.”

He said Sheikh Hasina fled to save herself and her family, giving them an exit route before her departure, but abandoned her party’s grassroots workers after using them for her own benefit.

“Hasina used leaders and activists of the Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League like tissues and discarded them when she no longer needed them,” Sarjis said.

He accused some of these activists of inciting unrest from abroad, warning that anyone who follows this call would face legal consequences. “If they fall for this provocation, they will face arrest.”

Sarjis also urged the grassroots leaders of the Awami League to reconsider their loyalties, advising them to reflect on the past 16 years and question whether those they followed truly stood by them.

“Don’t follow those who were absent when you needed them the most,” he said.
