Ban on Indian TV Channels sought in Bangladesh High Court

Dhaka [Bangladesh], December 3 (HBTV): A writ petition has been filed in the Bangladesh High Court requesting a ban on the broadcast of Indian TV channels in the country, citing concerns over the impact of Indian media on Bangladeshi culture and society.

The petition, filed on Monday by lawyer Ekhlas Uddin Bhuiyan, seeks a directive under the Cable Television Network Operation Act 2006 to prohibit the broadcast of Indian channels. The petition also questions why a rule should not be issued to ban channels such as Star Jalsha, Star Plus, Zee Bangla, Republic Bangla, and other Indian TV networks.

The petition alleges that provocative news and unregulated broadcasts of content opposing Bangladeshi culture are negatively influencing the youth and contributing to cultural erosion. It claims these channels operate without adhering to regulations.

The hearing may take place before a High Court bench comprising Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Sikder Mahmudur Razi, with respondents including secretaries from the Information and Home Ministries, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), and others.

The petition comes amid rising tensions in Bangladesh, marked by violent attacks against minorities, particularly Hindus, with incidents such as the destruction of temples and the arrest of a former priest, Chinmoy Krishna Das, over sedition charges.

India has previously expressed concern over the situation, urging Bangladesh to take steps to protect its minority communities. During a recent media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal called for Bangladesh to ensure the protection of minorities and safeguard their interests.
