Bangladesh on path to democratic transition: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said Bangladesh is moving towards a democratic transition following the July Uprising, expressing hope that the next national election will take place in mid-February 2026 in a stable environment.

Speaking as chief guest at a views-exchange meeting at the District Lawyers’ Association hall in Thakurgaon today (25 November), Fakhrul told participants, “Bangladesh is advancing on the path of democratic transition. A favourable atmosphere has been created, and we hope the next national election will be held in half of February 2026 without complications.”

The event, attended by lawyers from across the district, focused on the current political situation, judicial independence, human rights, the restoration of democratic rights and the role of legal professionals in ensuring justice, reports BSS.

Fakhrul said lawyers had long played a crucial part in defending democratic rights and the rule of law. He added that united efforts were needed to strengthen what he described as the foundations of nationalist power.

District Lawyers’ Association President Zainal Abedin and General Secretary Md Makdum Sabbir Mridul also took part, along with other senior members of the legal community.

Meanwhile in Chattogram, BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, the party’s candidate for Chattogram-10, encouraged party leaders and activists to approach voters with respect and affability to make them aware of the party’s welfare-oriented politics, reports BSS.

“Upholding national interests, ensuring people’s welfare and guaranteeing their safety are the core principles of the politics espoused by late president Ziaur Rahman,” he said during a views-exchange meeting with Kattali ward BNP leaders and activists at his Mehedibagh residence yesterday morning.

He said the party aimed to protect the rights of all citizens, regardless of caste, creed or religion, through tolerance and inclusivity. 

“The main goal of the BNP’s politics is to build a stable, prosperous and happy Bangladesh where no one is deprived of their legitimate rights, where every citizen can live safely with dignity and honour, and where all enjoy equal freedom to practise their religious rituals,” he said.

Khasru urged activists to conduct door-to-door outreach among all groups, from affluent to marginalised communities, and to motivate voters to support BNP candidates. He instructed them to highlight the political ideology of Ziaur Rahman and the party’s 31-point proposal, presented by Tarique Rahman, for rebuilding the country.
