A high-level BNP delegation, led by its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, departed for China tonight (22 June) aiming to strengthen ties between two nations.

The visit coincides with ongoing diplomatic engagement between Bangladesh, China, and Pakistan. On 19 June, the three countries held an informal trilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 9th China-South Asia Exposition and the 6th China-South Asia Cooperation Forum in Kunming.

During the meeting, the three sides exchanged views on possible trilateral cooperation on the basis of mutual trust, understanding and shared vision for peace, prosperity and stability in the region.

According to BNP sources, the visit is aimed at deepening the party’s relationship with the Chinese government and the CPC.

The BNP delegation left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 10:10pm, confirmed BNP Media Cell member Shayrul Kabir Khan.

The delegation includes BNP Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Selima Rahman, and AZM Zahid Hossain. Also joining the delegation are BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council members Zahir Uddin Swapon, Ismail Jabiullah, and Prof Sukomal Barua, along with BNP Media Cell Convener Maudud Ahmed Pavel.

In the Kunming meeting, Bangladesh Acting Foreign Secretary Md Ruhul Alam Siddique, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong and Pakistani Additional Foreign Secretary Imran Ahmed Siddiqui led their respective delegations, reads a press release.

They identified several areas for deeper cooperation including infrastructure, connectivity, trade, investment, healthcare, agriculture, maritime affairs, ICT, disaster preparedness, and climate change issues.

The three sides agreed to forge cooperation on the principles of openness, inclusivity, good neighbourliness and win-win situation.

The Acting Foreign Secretary emphasised aligning national development strategies with the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda under the Belt and Road Initiative, and called for stronger partnerships to enhance regional prosperity and improve the livelihoods of their peoples.

Last month, a BNP delegation participated in an international conference in Beijing at the invitation of the CPC.
