BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed has stressed the necessity of national unity among democratic forces to combat terrorism and fascism, and pledged to join the Inqilab Mancha’s programmes, following a gun attack on the platform’s leader Sharif Osman bin Hadi.
Speaking to journalists after meeting with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus today (13 December), Salahuddin stated, “If the democratic forces remain united in a democratic political alliance and if there is no division among ourselves, it is possible to tackle any kind of terrorism and the conspiracies of fascist collaborators nationally.”
The senior BNP leader emphasised that their goal is to demonstrate a united front.
“We want to show this unity — the national unity against fascism and terrorism will be our greatest strength. Only through this can we prevent this kind of national crisis,” he asserted.
He announced the BNP’s commitment to fully participate in programmes organised by the Inqilab Mancha.
“Inquilab Mancha has called for anti-fascism and anti-terrorism rallies. Their programme is ongoing today, and they may call for resistance rallies at Shahbagh or the Central Shaheed Minar tomorrow and the day after tomorrow,” he said, adding, “We have promised our full participation — we will go.”
His comments follow the shooting of Sharif Osman bin Hadi, the spokesperson for Inqilab Mancha, yesterday (12 December).
Hadi, a likely independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 seat, remains in critical condition at Evercare Hospital after undergoing surgery at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Salahuddin acknowledged that the “evil forces” responsible for this are operating both inside and outside the country. “We have called for a fair investigation and necessary measures regarding the incident,” he said.
Regarding the potential for further attacks on political candidates, Salahuddin said, “We are not ruling out any such possibility.”
He stressed that prevention requires a coordinated effort, stating, “It is the responsibility of the government, the political parties, and the people’s awareness is extremely important.
“If the home ministry, law enforcement agencies, joint forces, the government, the people, and the political parties work together, InshAllah, it will be possible to prevent such incidents,” he added.
