The National Consensus Commission has already consumed sufficient time and it is still possible to hold the national election by December this year, BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said today (2 June).
“I believe they are sincere — but they have wasted a significant amount of time.
“We’ve given our detailed opinion based on their report. There are many issues we’ve agreed on, and on some we’ve partially agreed,” Salahuddin told reporters after the 2nd round of dialogue with the commission.
“Perhaps we won’t have national consensus on everything — that’s the beauty of democracy. But we will accept what is beneficial for the nation and promotes national unity. We will embrace what ensures inclusion of all communities in the country.”
He further said, “We’ve reiterated that holding elections within December is achievable. Except for constitutional amendments, all other reforms can be implemented within a month — and we’ve demonstrated how that can be done.”
Salahuddin said there is no reason to delay the elections beyond December.
“We believe it is entirely possible to hold elections and form a national parliament within December. Most political parties also seem to favour a December election,” he added.
