Welcoming the interim government’s decision to ban the Awami League, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman today (11 May) said it would have been better if the decision came after discussions with other political parties.

Jamaat will give their detailed reaction after the gazette of the ban is issued, he told reporters at the 4th International Conference on Urban and Regional Planning, organised by the Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP) at the CIRDAP auditorium in Dhaka.

The interim government yesterday decided to ban all activities of Awami League, including cyberspace, under the Anti Terrorism Act until the trial of the party and its leaders.

The govt also decided to finalise and publish the July Declaration within the next 30 working days.

The Jamaat chief stated that if the government has genuine intentions, it is possible to announce the July Declaration within 30 working days.

Speaking at a round table at the conference, Shafiqur said a group of miscreants is destroying biodiversity under the protection of politicians.

“They not only destroy, they are also sheltered. The politicians who back these acts of destruction are complicit. Therefore, those political leaders have no moral right to govern.”

He further said, “After 5 August, there have been many meetings with different cadre groups. Before the meetings, they say the goal is to advise on how to move the country forward, but once the meetings begin, they only present their own demands. We want the people of the country to know how their taxes are being used and to become aware of their rights.”
