Statements by “Delhi’s servants” hold no importance in Bangladesh’s politics, National Citizen Party (NCP) spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan said on Sunday (1 February).

He made the statement while speaking to journalists after visiting the grave of July Uprising martyr Abu Sayed in Pirgonj, Rangpur, in response to a question about the Jatiyo Party’s campaign for a vote boycott and allegations of an unfair electoral environment.

The spokesperson said all major parties, including Jamaat, BNP, and NCP, are in favor of voting “Yes” in the referendum. What any political party described as “servants of Delhi” says or does makes no difference, he added.

Asif further said, “We have begun a nationwide march to build public opinion in favor of reforms. For this reason, we came to Rangpur first and visited Abu Sayed’s grave.

“Although NCP has nominated candidates in 30 constituencies for the election, we have appointed ambassadors in 270 constituencies to campaign for a yes vote in the referendum. Therefore, we are carrying out election-related activities in all 300 constituencies,” he added.

Regarding the level playing field in the election, Asif alleged that efforts are being made to give special advantages to a particular party.

He mentioned that an upazila secretary of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has been killed and said they are monitoring these developments.

Asif warned that if there is any attempt to conduct a conspiratorial election, they will build resistance.
