BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has stated that if the Election Commission (EC) functions properly, a national election could be held by June, rather than December.
He questioned why some individuals close to the government claim that elections cannot be held by December.
“Why would it be difficult to hold elections by December? It is the Election Commission’s responsibility to conduct elections. If the EC works properly, then why wait until December? The election could take place by June,” Rizvi said around 11:30am while addressing an event at the historic Bhuban Mohan Park in Rajshahi. The event was organised to commemorate the student uprising of 2024 and to meet with the families of those injured in Rajshahi and those martyred in Chapainawabganj due to law enforcement actions during the Hasina regime.

Rizvi also questioned why discussions about a Constituent Assembly were being raised when Bangladesh already has a constitution that can be amended as needed. “Such discussions are creating confusion among the people. A Constituent Assembly is only necessary when a country lacks laws and a constitution,” he remarked.
He further alleged that India had turned Bangladesh into a subservient state and that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s associates had taken refuge in India.
“India is discussing Bangladesh with the United States. Who gave India the right to negotiate on Bangladesh’s behalf?” Rizvi questioned.
He accused Sheikh Hasina of trying to destroy BNP, using the judiciary as a tool to fulfill her personal vendettas. He also compared Hasina’s governance style to that of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler, claiming she had learned repression from Hitler but not patriotism.
The event was attended by leaders and activists from BNP’s central committee, Rajshahi metropolitan and district BNP, as well as affiliated organisations. As part of the event, a financial donation of Tk100,000 was given to the families of martyrs, while Tk50,000 was provided to those injured.
