Deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina has fled the country following the July uprising, but her oppressive system remains in place, National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain said today (12 July).

Speaking at a street rally in the Foyla Bazar area in Bagerhat’s Rampal upazila, Akhtar alleged that extortion and land grabbing continue unabated across the country.

“If anyone wants to continue the politics of extortion, land grabbing, snatching, and commissions, they will face the same fate as Hasina.”

Calling for systemic reforms, the NCP leader said, “There must be reforms across all institutions to prevent enforced disappearances and killings in the future. One party believes holding elections is enough for democracy. Hasina believed that too.

“But without reforming state institutions and making the police neutral, democracy cannot be restored through elections alone. Reforms must come first — only then should elections be held.”

The rally was part of NCP’s ongoing programme ‘Desh Gorte July Padayatra’ (July Walkathon for Building the Nation).
