India has announced new restrictions on imports from Bangladesh through its land borders, a move that could impact key sectors in the export-driven Bangladeshi economy. The Indian Commerce Ministry confirmed that ready-made garments and several other products like cotton, processed foods, and wooden furniture can no longer enter via land routes in northeastern India.
This step follows Bangladesh’s recent decision to ban yarn imports from India through the same land ports, intensifying tensions between the two South Asian neighbors. The trade rift comes amid strained diplomatic relations after former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted and fled to India, where she now lives in self-imposed exile.
Bangladeshi businesses expressed deep concern over the restrictions. Pran-RFL Group, which exports around $60 million worth of goods to India every year, warned that the ban will severely affect their operations. “Most of our export items to India are now restricted. This is a big threat not only to our company but also to Bangladesh’s economy,” said Director Kamruzzaman Kamal.
Additionally, leaders in Bangladesh’s textile sector voiced alarm, noting that the ban could hurt cross-border trade. While some, like the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association, believe the industry will recover, others fear long-term disruption. Trade associations are calling for urgent dialogue to resolve the standoff.
Despite the impact, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Commerce said it has not yet received official communication about the new restrictions. “We’re waiting for a formal notice before deciding on our response,” said Sheikh Bashir Uddin, an advisor to the ministry.
According to recent trade data, Bangladesh imported nearly $9 billion worth of goods from India over the past 10 months, while its exports to India totaled just $1.5 billion. With India also canceling a key 2020 transshipment deal in April, tensions appear to be deepening — leaving regional trade stability hanging in the balance.
