BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, commenting on the recent interview of Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus with Al Jazeera, has said the past 16 years of struggle have been for democracy, to restore the democratic order in Bangladesh, and to return the people’s voting rights and ownership.

“No one has died or made sacrifices for any ‘superhuman’ to take responsibility for Bangladesh,” the BNP leader said during a press briefing today (28 April) following a meeting between BNP’s liaison committee, the National Awami Party (Bhashani), Amjanatar Dal, and Bangladesh Peoples’ Party at the BNP chairperson’s office in the capital’s Gulshan.

Amir Khasru stated that 50 political parties, which had fought on the streets against Sheikh Hasina, have clearly demanded that elections be held before December. “They also agreed on reforms that should be implemented immediately, and a roadmap should be prepared for the Election Commission to proceed with the elections.”

Regarding the interim government, Khasru said, “Who are these people claiming that the public wants to keep the interim government? If they refer to a specific group of beneficiaries who are undermining democracy, voting rights, and prioritising reforms, then these individuals are going against the people’s democracy.”

During the briefing, Tarek Rahman, secretary general of the Amjanatar Dal, said political parties have shared their opinions regarding reforms, and now it needs to be implemented accordingly.

“The government said it would publish the parties’ opinions on the website so people can see what each party wants. Then, they should also show the banned individuals who were not wanted by the Advisory Council,” he said, adding that it’s now clear the government is motivated by a desire for power, as shown by their actions.

Tarek also mentioned, “In discussions with the BNP, we have insisted that elections should take place by December. Does that mean 5 or 10 January? No. We are saying that elections should be held by December, which could mean August or November as well.”
