National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam on Friday said attempts to create confusion and fear are being made by a section after witnessing growing public support, but such efforts will not succeed.
“Any attempt to intimidate voters or capture polling centres would fail as people themselves would safeguard the voting process and ensure the victory of their genuine representatives,” he told a brief rally while on an election campaign in the Bhatar Thana area of the capital.
Nahid Islam conducted a door-to-door campaign in support of the NCP’s election symbol “Shaplakoli” in Bhatar from 7:30am to 9am. Later, he addressed a roadside gathering on Bashtola Road near Bhatar Thana, attended by leaders and activists of the NCP, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and other partners of the 10-party alliance.
A campaign procession was also held from Bashtola towards Rampura Bridge.
Nahid said electioneering would continue in Rampura North and South later in the day.
The Dhaka-11 constituency comprises parts of Rampura, Badda, Bhatar and Hatirjheel areas.
The NCP convener said his party stands against dynastic politics, discrimination and corruption, and is committed to establishing justice, good governance and genuine democracy.
He urged the party leaders and activists to go door to door to gain public trust and ensure maximum voter turnout on polling day. He also called for voting in favour of the referendum.
Referring to the upcoming election, Nahid Islam said it is not merely a change of power but an opportunity to establish a new political order after years of authoritarian rule.
He said the sacrifices made by students, workers and ordinary people during the mass uprising were aimed at restoring democracy, equality and national sovereignty.
He pointed out that the Dhaka-11 constituency has long been affected by extortion, crime, traffic congestion and shortages of gas and electricity, and pledged to take effective measures to address these problems if elected.
Nahid Islam also expressed optimism that the 10-party alliance would secure parliamentary representation through the election and play a leading role in governing the country.
