Mohammed Touhid Hossain, the foreign affairs advisor for the Bangladesh Government, reassured worshippers in the country that they have the opportunity to perform Durga Puja without hindrance, affirming that the tradition has long been upheld in Bangladesh.

Touhid’s remarks come amidst ongoing political uncertainty in Bangladesh, emphasising that there has never been an instance when Durga Puja was not observed in the country. When asked about the upcoming celebration of Durga Puja, Touhid dismissed concerns, stating, “Certainly, the worshipers who want to perform Durga Puja have the opportunity to do so. There should be no doubt about this.”

The foreign affairs advisor addressed the recent political developments following a student-led movement that led to the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, resulting in clashes and protests that claimed the lives of over 600 individuals. Sheikh Hasina reportedly fled to India, and an interim government led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus assumed power.

Sheikh Hasina's asylum and Bangladesh's outreach to Pakistan are reshaping India-Bangladesh relations.

In response to allegations of attacks on minority groups and Hindus following the political transition, Touhid clarified that the incidents were primarily driven by political tensions and were not targeted based on religious grounds. He stated, “Putting it as anti-Hindu agitation would be utterly wrong. The violence did take place against mostly Awami League loyalists.”

Touhid emphasised that a vacuum in the administration and policing during the transitional period led to heightened tensions, but he highlighted that actions were not directed against a particular religious community. He further explained that the violence did not discriminate based on religious affiliations, noting that more Muslims than Hindus experienced aggression during the upheaval.

Regarding his recent meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Touhid characterised the discussion as constructive, indicating mutual efforts by both India and Bangladesh to foster positive bilateral relations. He underscored the importance of maintaining strong ties between the two nations for shared prosperity.

The Bangladesh Foreign Affairs advisor dismissed any ongoing complaints or actions within the country, emphasising a commitment to stability and outreach in the region.
