BNP leaders and activists in Kushtia’s Daulatpur took to the streets yesterday (4 November) protesting an alleged attack, vandalism, and arson at party offices backed by Sharif Uddin Jewel, a nomination aspirant from Dhaka North Jubo Dal.
The protest rally and procession were organised by local BNP units and their affiliated bodies in the afternoon.
The rally began at the Daulatpur Government Pilot Model Secondary School ground and concluded at Center Mor after marching through Daulatpur Thana Bazar.
Protesters alleged that on Monday evening, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the name of former lawmaker and Upazila BNP President Reza Ahmed Bacchu Molla as the party’s candidate for the Kushtia-1 (Daulatpur) constituency at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka.
Following the announcement, Bacchu Molla’s supporters brought out a victory procession, distributed sweets, and chanted slogans against Jewel across different areas of Daulatpur.
During the celebrations, a crude bomb attack was carried out on the house of Daulatpur Upazila Jubo Dal Member Secretary Rezaur Rahman Masum, spreading panic in the area after the explosion.
Locals alleged that similar explosions took place in Allahdorga, Boalia, and Mahishkundi markets, where Bacchu Molla’s supporters reportedly set off cocktails in celebration.
Speakers at the protest further alleged that Bacchu Molla’s supporters vandalised BNP offices backed by Jewel supporters in various parts of Daulatpur.
They reportedly tore down portraits of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and set fire to banners and festoons bearing the party’s symbol.
“Multiple cocktail attacks were carried out at my home one after another. My family is in panic. But we will not be silenced by fear. We demand a proper investigation into the incident and legal action against those involved,” Rezaur Rahman said.
More than a hundred leaders and activists from BNP, Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, Chhatra Dal, and other affiliated organisations joined the protest rally and procession.
