The National Citizen Party (NCP), a new political party formed by student leaders of the July mass uprising, is set to be formally launched today (28 February).

The launching event will be held in Dhaka’s Manik Mia Avenue at 3pm.

The organisers have planned a large gathering for the occasion, with invitations sent to key political figures and diplomats.

“We have targeted a rally of about three lakh people at Manik Mia Avenue. We have also invited other political parties, forces and prominent citizens of the country,” Jatiya Nagorik Committee Convenor Nasiruddin Patwari, who is slated to be appointed as the chief coordinator of the new party, told The Business Standard.

Responding to a question about whether the new student organisation – Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad – formed by SAD coordinators will be invited to the rally, Patwari said the coordinators of the SAD who led the July mass uprising have also been invited.

Abdul Hannan Masud, chief organiser of the Students Against Discrimination (SAD), yesterday went to the Chief Adviser’s Office to invite Muhammad Yunus at the launching event.

He also went to the offices of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami to invite them.

Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has also been invited to the event, organisers said.

Additionally, ambassadors, high commissioners, and diplomats from 51 countries stationed in Dhaka have been invited.

According to the organisers, 36 political parties have been invited to the launch, excluding the 14 parties that were part of the previous Awami League-led government.
