Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur has criticised the interim government’s decision to allow a humanitarian corridor for Myanmar’s Rakhine State.

“We will not permit the interim government or any government to take decisions that jeopardise the country’s independence and sovereignty,” he said while addressing a workers’ rally organised by the Bangladesh Workers’ Rights Council in the Jirabo area of Ashulia, marking the Great May Day today (1 May).

He urged the government to halt any discussions about the so-called humanitarian corridor that proposes using Bangladesh land to reach Myanmar’s Rakhine State.

“Do not take even a single step further. Our support and affection for you do not give you the right to act unilaterally, expecting us to accept everything without question,” he said.

Nur also voiced concerns about a perceived “compromising attitude” among some advisers of the interim government.

“We can see a compromising attitude among some advisers. They, along with elements in the administration, are attempting to usher in a ‘refined Awami League’,” he said.

Turning to allied political organisations involved in the recent “mass uprising,” Nur said, “Friends, partners in this movement, we do not know when elections will be held. While we deeply respect Professor Yunus, the overall situation does not appear favourable to me.”
