The recent meeting between Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman will hold no significance unless a clear, time-bound election roadmap is announced, the Workers Party of Bangladesh said today (14 June).
After the meeting in London yesterday, the CA and Tarique issued a joint statement that the next national election can be held by mid-February next year if all preparations can be completed by that time.
In a statement issued today, the Workers Party expressed concern over the lack of clarity in the announced timeline for the election.
“The conditions mentioned in the joint statement leave room for continued uncertainty,” it said.
The party emphasised that previous meetings between democratic political parties and the chief adviser had produced a consensus to hold elections within December 2025. “However, the London meeting appears to have shifted that target, potentially derailing public aspirations for a swift democratic transition.”
The Workers Party also warned that unless law and order is restored and the interim government sets a definitive timeline for returning the country to an elected political leadership, the situation could deteriorate further.
“Over the past 10 months, the interim administration has failed to show meaningful progress,” it added.
The party further criticised the rise of “communal and fundamentalist forces” and the growing presence of “neo-fascist tendencies in governance”, and said these pose a serious threat to democracy and the integrity of the electoral process.
The Workers Party reiterated its call for an immediate announcement of a December 2025 election roadmap and urged the interim government to bring all registered political parties into the electoral arena for a credible and participatory election.
