Bangladesh’s Political Turmoil: ICT Under Scrutiny Amid Hasina’s Legal Battles

Bangladesh’s political atmosphere is experiencing significant upheaval as the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government intensifies its scrutiny against electoral candidates with police indictments. Recent amendments aim to disbar those with charges of crimes against humanity from participating in elections. This strategic move appears to be an effort to damage the Awami League’s prospects.

Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has become a focal point amidst these moves. Following her removal from power in 2024, she now faces several legal actions, including multiple arrest warrants. Critics question the independence of Bangladesh’s judicial processes, citing concerns about international standards and procedural fairness, given the reliance on contentious practices such as trials in absentia.

The international community, including the United Nations, has voiced concerns. Calls for reforms within the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) aim to ensure transparency and justice. They suggest international monitors and legal advisory to strengthen the tribunal’s credibility and adhere to global norms while respecting Bangladesh’s sovereignty.
