National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Sarjis Alam flew into a rage last night (11 October) after the power went out during the party’s event in Panchagarh, threatening to tear out the hearts of Northern Electricity Supply (Nesco) officials.

Power cuts have occurred during NCP events in Panchagarh before as well, said Sarjis, the party’s chief organiser for the northern region, reports Prothom Alo.

“The owner of Nesco and his father will have to answer for this. Why does this happen during our programmes? If it had happened once or twice, I would let it go.”

Those behind this are political bankrupts, he said, before warning, “We will see how big their hearts really are; we will tear them out and leave them on the street.”

Earlier that day, Sarjis led a march from Panchagarh town to Banglabandha protesting extortion and corruption. It ended at around 9:30pm near the July Memorial adjacent to Sher-e-Bangla Park, where he delivered his speech.

Declaring his personal commitment, Sarjis said, “From now on, if any institution in Panchagarh engages in politically biased behaviour, it will not be allowed to operate here. You political bankrupts are only serving your own interests. This is Panchagarh, not a place for your nonsense.

“I did not even give thought to the likes of the murderer Hasina, the autocrat; I will not bother with district and divisional Nesco officials like you.”

He continued, “Whenever you speak out against extortionists, land grabbers, syndicates, drug dealers or corrupt people, they feel threatened and try to obstruct you.

“But let me be clear: as long as we live, those who abuse power, engage in corruption, extortion or illegal trade in Panchagarh will never sleep peacefully again.”
