BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas expressed hope that the July Charter signing event will mark significant progress toward a democratic transition.

Joining the event this afternoon (17 October), he said, “Some parties are trying to create disturbance and have chosen not to attend today’s ceremony. They have always been disruptive, we are keeping an eye on them,” he said.

Abbas added that the charter was prepared through consensus after discussions with all parties, and the absence of certain groups at the last minute was “part of the disruption.”

More than a dozen BNP leaders, led by the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, are participating at the event.

However, leaders from several parties, including the NCP and the Left Democratic Alliance, refrained from joining the ceremony.
