Having realised that the political ground is gradually but steadily slipping from underground the Bangladesh illegitimate interim government’s chief advisor Md Yunsu is trying to win over allies and supporters to secure an honourable rehabilitation in the post-election scenario in the country after February 2026. Sources from Bangladesh said that the realisation has dawned on Yunus that his sponsored party the newly formed National Citizens Party (NCP) led by young fundamentalists may not ultimately be able to win the upcoming election to the National Assembly.
In order to keep his options open Yunus has now set in motion a process of winning over political support to avert the ignominy of irrelevance in politics and secure rehabilitation as President of the country. This came to light significantly in an army day reception programme in ‘Senakunj’ army headquarter in Dhaka. The BNP chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, accompanied by her top party leaders , Mirza Fakhrul Alamgir, Gayesh Chandra Roy, Abdul Main Khan, Amir Khasru , Mahmud Chowdhury , had reached the ‘Senakunj’ to attend the programme.
Md Yunus who had also been a special invitee to the programme took an opportunity to speak to Begum Zia for a while as part of an attempt to win over BNP support to his initiative for rehabilitation. Begum Zia’s press secretary Shairul Kavir did not disclose to media persons the content of the discussion the former prime minister had with Md Yunus. But sources aware of what happened in the brief exchange of views between the two said that ‘it was essentially an attempt on the part of yunus to break the ice for further discussion in future’. They added that the BNP leadership is not happy with the style of functioning of Yunus and his mollycoddling with the fundamentalist Jamat-e-Islami on all issues . Now confronting the reality of the situation and the distinct possibility that BNP will definitely emerge as the largest party after the upcoming elections Yunus is trying to woo the BNP leadership for rehabilitation in power in the post-poll scenario.
