Party leaders and activists have gathered at the Evercare Hospital in Dhaka to enquire about BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is undergoing treatment in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of the hospital with infections in her lungs and heart.
Since 11:00pm Friday, several leaders and activists from the BNP and its associate bodies stood outside the hospital, waiting for updates on her health.
Earlier, around 7:00pm, Khaleda’s younger sister Selina Islam visited the hospital to check on her.
Later, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, senior leaders Moyeen Khan and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, along with other top leaders, also visited the hospital.
“For the overall well-being of Begum Khaleda Zia’s treatment, the party has instructed not to allow party workers to crowd inside the hospital,” said BNP media cell member Shairul Kabir Khan.
BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas said, “We tried to talk to her inside the hospital while maintaining distance. She recognised us. We offered her salam, and she responded.”
“There is one request — that everyone personally prays for her.”
Abbas’s wife, Afroza Abbas, a leader of the BNP women’s wing, said, “We offered salam, and she [Khaleda] nodded in response.”
After midnight, BNP leader Moyeen Khan told journalists at the hospital gate, “The medical board met and reviewed her latest condition, and is taking the necessary steps.”
“She [Khaleda Zia] is under close observation, and they are studying the treatment parameters and taking necessary action,” he added.
According to members of the medical board, Khaleda’s kidneys are not functioning properly.
Physicians said if her physical condition allows, they will try to send her to the UK for treatment. If that is not possible, they are considering Singapore.
