The deceased, identified as Amrit Mondal, also known as Samrat, reportedly had at least two cases filed against him with Pangsha Police Station, including a murder case. Upon receiving information about the incident, the police rushed to the spot and rescued Samrat in a critical condition. He was taken to the Pangsha Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Pangsha Circle) Debrata Sarkar said one of Samrat’s associates was arrested during the incident, and had a pistol and a one-shooter gun in his possession, according to The Daily Star. Tarique Rahman gets rousing welcome
Meanwhile, Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), landed in Dhaka on Thursday, along with his wife and daughter, after 17 years of living in exile in London. From the airport, Rahman is headed to 300 Feet in Purbachal where he will address a rally. Rahman’s return to Bangladesh comes at a crucial juncture as the South Asian country is reeling under violence following the death of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi last week.
Rahman, son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, is one of the strong contenders for the prime ministerial post in Bangladesh’s upcoming elections in February 2026.
Situation remains tense
Bangladesh remains tense a week after Hadi’s death, who died in a hospital in Singapore on December 18 following an assassination attempt in Dhaka. The grim situation in Bangladesh further worsened on Wednesday after miscreants hurled the bomb from a flyover in front of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad in Dhaka’s Moghbazar area, according Bangladeshi media outlet The Daily Star.
The crude bomb, hurled by unidentified men from the flyover, struck a person who died on the spot, Inspector (Operations) of Hatirjheel Police Station Md Mohiuddin said, according to The Daily Star.
Earlier, Inqilab Moncho on Tuesday held a protest rally in Dhaka over Hadi’ assassination at Shahbagh in capital city Dhaka.
This comes after Inqilab Moncho on Monday concluded its protest at the Central Shaheed Minar after issuing a 24-hour ultimatum to the government, seeking justice for the killers.
Inqilab Moncho, which was at the forefront during the uprising of July 2024, has demanded that the killers of its convenor Hadi be brought to justice before the 13th national election and the referendum takes place in Bangladesh, as reported by BDNews24 on Monday.

At least seven Indian cities saw people turn out in huge numbers to protest the killing. These include New Delhi, Kolkata, Bhopal, Jammu, Agartala, Mumbai and Hyderabad.
- Amid outrage in India over the killing of the Hindu man in Bangladesh, a senior adviser in the Muhammad Yunus-led Bangladesh government has said that the government is taking responsibility of the Dipu Chandra Das’s family, news agency PTI reported. CR Abrar, education adviser in Bangladesh, also met the father of the Hindu man who was killed in Mymensingh.
- Youth leader Hadi’s killing triggered unrest in Bangladesh last week during which offices of prominent Bangladeshi media offices, Daily Star and Prothom Alo, were torched, and journalists were trapped inside for a long time. The murder case will be tried under the Speedy Trial Tribunal amid calls for swift justice by the student leader’s supporters in Bangladesh, the Daily Star reported on Tuesday.

Bangladesh unrest LIVE updates: Student wing of Awami League alleged that Tarique Rahman’s homecoming is part of a “backdoor deal” aimed at facilitating a one-sided election amid rising political instability in the country, ANI reported. Saddam Hussain, President of the Bangladesh Students’ League, said the return of the BNP leader would not help stabilise the situation in Bangladesh but would instead deepen political polarisation and strengthen what he termed “fascist politics”. “The return of the BNP’s acting chairman will not solve Bangladesh’s problems. Ultimately, it will facilitate a one-sided election and ensure the continuation of fascist politics. He is a convicted criminal in multiple cases linked to the 2004 attack and bypassed judicial processes.
