NEW DELHI: Foreign affairs adviser Md Touhid Hossain said on Monday that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina‘s stay in India will not negatively impact the bilateral ties between the two countries, according to a PTI report. Hossain said that Bangladesh is committed to maintaining good relations with India.
Hossain addressed concerns regarding whether the prolonged stay of Hasina in India could affect bilateral ties.He called such concerns hypothetical and asserted that a person’s stay in another country should not influence the relationship between the two nations, according to the state media.
“This is a hypothetical question. If someone stays in a country why the relations with that particular country will be affected? There is no reason for that,” he said.
‘Always try to maintain good relation’
Hossain further said that the relationship between Bangladesh and India is based on mutual interests and friendship.
“Friendship does not exist if the interest is hurt,” indicating that both nations have shared interests that they will continue to prioritize. He assured that Bangladesh will “always try to maintain good relations” with India.
‘India is a good friend of Bangladesh’
“(But) it is important that people feel India is a good friend of Bangladesh…We want that, we want to advance the (Dhaka-Delhi) relation towards that direction,” said Hossain.
Earlier, Hossain briefed diplomats, including the Indian high commissioner to Bangladesh, about the interim government‘s stance towards India.
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India on August 5 amid widespread protests against her government’s controversial quota system in jobs.
