India is moving quickly to shore up relations with Bangladesh following last week’s landmark election that swept into power a former ruling party known for prioritizing closer links with China.
Tarique Rahman was sworn in as Bangladesh’s next prime minister before a crowd of visiting foreign leaders and other dignitaries on Tuesday after a landslide win last week that delivered a two-thirds parliamentary majority to his Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
The result catapults one of Bangladesh’s two major historic ruling parties back into power. The party has advocated for closer ties with China and says it will pursue a more “balanced” relationship with India now that it has returned to office.
