Yunus made Bangladesh poorer during his one and half year misrule, 30 lakhs people added to poor category

By Our Correspondent

Agartala, February 21, 2026

For all his past rhetoric on despatching poverty to museum , Md Yunus, the chief advisor to the illegitimate interim government of Bangladesh that carried on a consistent misrule of the country for one and half year since August 8 2024, also consigned 3 million more people of the country below povertyline by mismanagement of the economy. This has come to light in a just-concluded countrywide survey conducted by the World Bank.

Speaking on the issue the vice chancellor of Jahangir Nagar university and eminent economist Abdul Bayes said that Md Yunus , as an economist himself, had a golden opportunity to improve the country’s economy but, having succumbed to the pulls and pressures of Jamati and other fundamentalist elements for clinging on to power he not only wasted that opportunity but pushed the country down a pit. He also cited various economic indicators to prove his point.

Professor Abdul Bayes said that by mismanaging the economy Yunus burdened the fragile economy of Bangladesh by drawing additional international debt of Rs 23 lakh crore, the repayment of which will now bleed the country’s economy at the cost of the new government and people. Apart from this, the non-performing assets of the banks have also grown alarmingly during the disastrous one and half year rule of Yunus and his illegitimate government. He said that up to September 30 2025 the total unpaid loans drawn from banks stood at a staggering 6.44 lakh crore Bangladeshi Taka. This forms 35.73% of the total loan disbursed by the banks . “This is a critical situation worsened by the high level of foreign loans drawn at exorbitant rates of interest” said Professor Abdul Bayes.

He also pointed out the crisis faced by the garment industry which is Bangladesh’s main export outside the country and a foreign exchange earner and the present troubled relationship with India . This is slowly choking the stressed Bangladesh economy and the new government should go for a major reset immediately , said Abdul Bayes. He appealed to the new government to come out with a detailed white paper on the state of the economy , specifying the steps needed to be taken to set things right.
