New Delhi: Taking a cue from India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have reached out to the US for a waiver to import fuel from Russia, with the Iran war upending global energy markets, especially impacting small developing nations.

The waiver sought by Dhaka and Colombo is similar to the one recently granted to New Delhi by the Trump administration to partly ease supply disruptions caused by the war. Bangladesh is proposing to import up to 600,000 tonnes of Russian diesel, ET has learnt.

Russian ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Khozin on Monday met power, energy and mineral resources minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku to discuss bilateral energy cooperation. During the meeting, both sides explored prospects for collaboration in the gas and nuclear energy sectors, as well as the supply of fuel to Bangladesh, said people based in Dhaka.
