A 38-year-old man, Ahmad Ullah, who suffered injuries in an explosion and subsequent fire at the SN Corporation shipbreaking yard at Sitakunda in Chattogram, died on Sunday while he was being taken to Dhaka for better treatment.
On Saturday, at least 12 people suffered burn injuries in an explosion involving an old product tanker that used to belong to Shipping Corporation of India called Swarajya.
Six remain in intensive care units with severe burns.
Operations at the shipbreaking yard have been suspended until further notice. The Department of Environment said that in the primary investigations, it was found that several conditions of the environmental clearance for the shipbreaking yard were violated and the conditions of the scrap ship’s clearance were also breached.
According to the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association there have been at least 13 accidents at the same demo yard since 2010.
