Bangladesh’s political system has transformed Sheikh Hasina into a tyrant and empowered her dominance, Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader said today (26 September).

“Our constitution grants the government unlimited power. For this reason, even a political party that wins overwhelming public support in a fair election can transform into an autocratic force,” he said at a views exchange meeting at Jatiya Party chairman’s Banani office.

In this context, Quader referenced a quote by historian Lord Acton: “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

He further said, “In Bangladesh, nearly 100% of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches fall under the control of the head of government, including key constitutional positions. The government, in turn, becomes accountable to no one. Under these conditions, any government in Bangladesh can potentially become oppressive.”

Mentioning that the people hope the interim government will ensure a fair election, the JP chairman said, “Before this [election], we call for necessary reforms across all sectors, including the constitution, to prevent any future government from becoming too powerful after winning elections.”

Jatiya Party Secretary General Md Mujibul Haque Chunnu, presidium member Sherifa Quader, Monirul Islam Milon, chairman’s adviser Rafiqul Alam Salim, Zahid Hasan, organising secretary MA Hannan were also present at the meeting.
