A high-level US delegation concluded its visit to Bangladesh today, emphasising the need for labour reforms to strengthen democracy and sustain economic prosperity in the country.

Led by State Department Special Representative Kelly M Fay Rodriguez and Department of Labour Deputy Undersecretary Thea Lee, the delegation reiterated Washington’s commitment to supporting worker empowerment as a cornerstone of inclusive economic growth, gender equity, and democratic resilience.

The USA supports Bangladesh in further strengthening workers’ rights to form independent trade unions and collectively bargain for better working conditions, the US embassy said in a press release.

Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus assured the delegation that labour reforms are a top priority for the interim government.
Representatives from USAID, major US brands, and global labour organisations accompanied the delegation, including leaders from Gap Inc, PVH Corp, and VF Corporation, which collectively procure $1.8 billion annually from Bangladesh’s readymade garment sector.

The delegation highlighted that improving labour rights, especially in the RMG sector, and ensuring safe working conditions are shared responsibilities of governments, employers, and global buyers.

Worker empowerment is vital to stable employment and living wages that allow Bangladeshi families to thrive, according to the press release.

Marking over 50 years of bilateral ties, the United States reaffirmed its partnership with Bangladesh, pledging continued support for economic stability, human rights, and independent trade unions to benefit workers and industries alike.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) hosted a networking Dinner at the Westin Dhaka on November 25, in honor of the US Delegation Team from the US Department of State and the US Department of Labor.

Recently, AmCham conducted research on “Development of Labor Conditions in Bangladesh for Sustainable Growth”, with findings from it  presented during the program, covering improvements and areas for further development.
