Head of Mission of the Netherlands to Bangladesh André Carstens today (21 January) met with Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan at her secretariat office.

During the meeting, they discussed avenues for collaboration in addressing Bangladesh’s pressing environmental challenges and water management priorities, reads a ministry press release.

Rizwana, also the water resources adviser, highlighted the critical need for assistance in mitigating saline intrusion in coastal areas, which severely affects local livelihoods.

She also emphasized the importance of resolving water-logging issues in regions like Bhabodaho and Bil Dakatia, while seeking support for river dredging and cleanup initiatives.

Additionally, she called for Dutch cooperation in constructing Musapur Regulator in Feni.

She sought cooperation in environmental programmes such as a Dhaka University student-led cleanup initiative and efforts to tackle noise pollution.

The adviser sought special attention for protecting erosion-prone areas in Sylhet, particularly along the Surma River.

The Netherlands has been a longstanding partner in addressing Bangladesh environmental challenges, she said, adding that their expertise can significantly contribute to achieving Bangladesh’s national goals.

André Carstens reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh in its environmental and water management efforts. “The Netherlands is ready to cooperate in all the priority areas identified by the Government of Bangladesh. Effective collaboration is essential for the implementation of the Bangladesh Delta Plan.”

Both parties agreed to enhance collaboration in these key areas to build resilience against climate change and promote sustainable environmental management.
