The interim government has taken the initiative to restore five lost plant species and five endangered animal species.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, advisor to the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, announced the initiative this afternoon (18 March) during a discussion with officials and staff at the Bangladesh National Herbarium, adjacent to the Mirpur National Botanical Garden, reads a ministry press statement.
The plan aims to complete this initiative before the upcoming International Day for Biological Diversity.
Speaking on the occasion, the environment advisor highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to conserve biodiversity.
She stated that a biodiversity register would be created under the Biodiversity Act.
Research on endangered and lost plant species will be expanded, and a booklet will be published to provide relevant information to stakeholders.
She emphasised that the National Herbarium is not just a conservation centre but also a crucial hub for research and education.
She directed the officials to enhance collaboration with the Forest Department to improve research quality.
Earlier, the advisor visited the plant museum of the National Herbarium and later toured the National Botanical Garden.
During the visit, the Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Farhina Ahmed; Joint Secretary (Forest) Shamima Begum; Chief Conservator of Forests Md Amir Hossain Chowdhury; National Herbarium Director Md Rezaul Karim; and National Botanical Garden Director Shawkat Imran Arafat, along with other senior officials, were present.
