Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader has called for the resignation of the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus for failing to ‘ensure the safety and security of the citizens’ following a reported attack on a iftar programme of the party in Mirpur’s Kafrul.

In a video statement today (19 March), Quader expressed grave concerns over the current law and order situation, stating, “It has deteriorated beyond description. There is no guarantee of people’s lives and property.

“The government’s primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of its citizens, but it has failed in this duty. The police force has been rendered ineffective. Instead of making the police functional, they [govt] are throwing the country into turmoil,” he said.

Labelling the current government as ineffective, he said, “Since they [govt] are unable to run the country, they should step down. The sooner they leave, the better it will be for the nation and its people.”

Furthermore, he alleged that the government might use the worsening law and order situation as an excuse to prolong its tenure.

When asked about the attack on the party’s iftar programme, a police official of Mirpur division, on condition of anonymity, told The Business Standard, the police were unaware of the Jatiya Party’s iftar gathering as no permission had been sought.

“However, upon receiving information, police rushed to the scene. The incident occurred due to internal party conflicts. Additionally, a few members of the Students Against Discrimination also created obstacles,” the official added.
