Meteorologist Mostofa Kamal Polash has warned of a strong chance of a cyclone forming in the Bay of Bengal between 23–28 May.

On his verified Facebook page yesterday, Polash wrote that the potential cyclone will be named Shakti — a name proposed by Sri Lanka.

He also said it could make landfall between 24-26 May, and may affect areas between India’s Odisha coast and Bangladesh’s Chattogram coast.

However, the most likely impact zones appear to be West Bengal and Bangladesh’s Khulna division, his post reads.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department  issued an official warning to this end today.

In a weather forecast for inland river ports from 09:00pm to 9:00am tomorrow, the BMD predicted rain and thundershower with gusty winds.

This weather may persist over Rangpur, Dinajpur, Bogra, Tangail, Mymensingh and Sylhet areas.

In the meantime, river ports in these areas have been asked to hoist the warning signal-1.

According to the Bangladesh Weather Observation Team (BWOT), a weather circulation may form over the Bay of Bengal between 16-18 May, which could gradually intensify into a cyclone.

If it approaches Bangladesh, coastal regions could face strong winds, heavy rainfall, and tidal surges.
