Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has emphasised the need to modernise Chattogram Port, describing it as the “heart” of Bangladesh’s economy.
He made the call during a visit to the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) of Chattogram Port on Wednesday, according to state news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS). This is his first visit to his home district since assuming leadership of the interim government.
“We must connect this heart to our neighbours,” Yunus is quoted as saying by BSS.
“I’ve mentioned Nepal and the seven northeastern states of India — the Seven Sisters. If they join in, they will benefit, and so will we. Those who don’t, will fall behind.”
As part of his daylong itinerary, Yunus began by visiting Yard-5 of the New Mooring Container Terminal. There, he participated in a meeting with senior officials from the port and shipping sectors, as well as representatives from port users’ associations and business organisations.
During the terminal visit, officials briefed the chief advisor on the port’s operational capacity. In response, Yunus remarked: “This is a major opportunity for us.”
He outlined various initiatives the interim government has undertaken to bring globally renowned port management companies into the fold in an effort to elevate Chattogram Port to international standards.
“If these plans are implemented, they will have a positive impact on the economy and create jobs for thousands of people,” he said.
“If we want to transform Bangladesh’s economy, Chattogram Port is our best hope. There is no alternative.”
Underscoring the port’s strategic importance, Yunus continued: “Chattogram Port is the heart of our economy. But if that heart is weak, no doctor can fix it. That’s why we must make it world class.”
He noted that global port management companies had been invited before, but no significant progress was made.
Commenting on Bangladesh’s global standing, Yunus said: “While the world has moved forward, Bangladesh has lagged far behind. No one seems to take it seriously. That’s why I’m pushing for change. I’ve said that the port must be handed over to the world’s top operators. I believe one day everyone will understand why.”
Recalling his personal connection with the port, Yunus added: “I’ve been looking forward to this visit. Chattogram Port is nothing new to me. I’ve known it since childhood. Though much has changed, it’s unfortunate that progress has been so slow. Ever since I got the opportunity, I’ve been thinking about what could be done.”
Shipping Advisor Sakhawat Hossain praised the chief advisor’s focus on port development.
“Building multiple terminals around Chattogram Port will help reduce container congestion. I believe you’ll begin to see changes within the next six months,” he said.
