BNP Organising Secretary Shama Obaid has said if the national elections are held in April 2026, the newly elected government will face a major crisis.

That is because the new government will have to announce the national budget just one month later, she said at an event in Faridpur on Monday (9 June).

Regarding the election timeline announced by the interim government, BNP leader Shama urged the chief adviser to reconsider.

Citing concerns regarding Ramadan and Eid coinciding with the election timeline, Shama described April as an unsuitable time for holding elections.

She also mentioned unfavourable weather conditions and academic season.

“So, for many practical reasons, this month may not be appropriate for the people of Bangladesh, the voters, and various political parties — especially for our mothers, sisters, and the young generation. The interim government should reconsider this.

“If you [interim government] can hold an election in April, you can also do it in January or February before Ramadan. There’s no issue with holding it in December either,” said the BNP leader.
