The BNP and like-minded political allies are moving forward with preparations for the upcoming national elections, the party’s Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said today (2 July).

Speaking to the media following a series of meetings at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan, the BNP leader said electoral activities have already begun.

Referring to the recent meeting between the party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman and Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, Khasru said, “Following the London meeting, a joint statement mentioned the possibility of elections in the first half of February.

“That has been discussed today. We are moving forward with the election in mind.”

BNP’s liaison committee held separate meetings with four like-minded political parties — Jan Adhikar Party, Jatiya Party, Aam Janata Party, and Ganatantrik Bam Oikya.

When asked about the issue of proportional representation, Khosru said, “There is no mention of the proportional electoral system in our 31 points. Such a major change cannot be implemented without the next parliament.”

He added, “Just like when we transitioned from a presidential to a parliamentary system, all parties reached a consensus in parliament. Any fundamental change must go to the people first, gain their mandate, and then be passed through parliament.”
