BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today (31 July) stressed the importance of mutual understanding among political parties given the current political situation in the country.

“There must be mutual understanding among political parties. There will be mudslinging in a democracy, and many things will be said. But there needs to be a limit to this, which is possible through mutual understanding. Without it, severe crises arise,” he said at a discussion marking the first anniversary of the July Uprising at the National Press Club.

He said, “The current time is for mutual understanding among us. If we can quickly resolve our issues and try to move forward, the people will reap the benefits.”

“We succeeded in the 1952 Language Movement, the 1969 mass uprising, the 1971 Liberation War, and the 2024 mass uprising. So, I believe we will succeed this time too.”

Referring to the resolution of many issues through elections, he mentioned, “Despite everything, we have been able to agree on 12 issues in the ongoing Consensus Commission. This is certainly good news.

“Discussions are ongoing regarding the remaining issues. I hope they will be resolved soon. I believe many problems will be solved through the national election to be held in mid-February 2026.”

Mentioning all the martyrs of the mass uprising and the last 15 years, he further said, “Those of us who are still alive amidst the struggles are very fortunate. Our responsibility now is to work to stop the tears of the families of all our brothers and sisters who have been martyred. If we fail to do this, it will be a betrayal of the martyrs.”
