Bangladesh is considered to be the eighth most vulnerable country to the impacts of climate change, with its children and youth among the most at risk from rising temperatures, frequent floods and extreme weather events. In such a context, it is essential that every citizen, especially the younger generation, understands what climate change is, how it could impact their life and what they can do to combat it. Integrating climate change into the education system is a crucial step toward developing informed, empowered, and proactive communities capable of responding to these challenges. For this purpose, Bangladesh has launched the “Climate Smart Education Systems Initiative”, an eighteen-month programme aimed at integrating climate change adaptation and environmental sustainability into the country’s education system.

In his remarks during the online launch event held on Monday, 7 July 2025, the Senior Secretary, Siddique Zobair, Secondary and Higher Education Division under the Ministry of Education noted that Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to climate-induced disasters and emphasized the need for a responsive education system. He stressed the importance of coordinated efforts and encouraged all relevant actors to utilize existing platforms and partnerships to ensure effective implementation and alignment with national priorities.
