Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has said the next five to six days are crucial for Bangladesh’s political future as work is ongoing regarding the July Charter and several other issues.
“This period will indicate where Bangladesh is heading,” he said on Thursday (31 July) at a dialogue organised by the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF).
Speaking at the event in the Secretariat, he said, “Let me assure you, there will not be a single day’s delay in holding the national parliamentary election.
“It will be held within the timeframe announced by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus. Both the chief adviser and the entire cabinet are firm on this position.”
He added that nothing will stand in the way of a fair election.
On the occasion of the interim government’s anniversary, it is being speculated that the chief adviser may announce the election date.
Last week, Head of the 12-party alliance Mostafa Jamal Haider quoted the chief adviser as saying that the election date and process will be announced within the next four to five days.
In response to a question about this, Shafiqul said, “We haven’t heard anything about an election-related announcement coming in 4-5 days.
“A political leader said this after coming out of a meeting with the chief adviser. We don’t know what was discussed between them. We issued a press release about that day’s meeting.”
Regarding the election date, the press secretary added, “The chief adviser initially mentioned early April. Then in London, we said that if several reforms are implemented and things move forward, the election would be held in February. We are still holding that position. There will not be even a day’s delay.”
